The Africans who were brought here as slaves were not just passive victims. They found ways to resist their victimization. All whites were not bad, and some black resisters found white allies. Concrete examples are critical. For young children, examples can be found in picture books. In the Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi we read about the Lamanites being cursed with a black skin: "And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing because of their iniquity wherefore. as they were white, and exceeding fair. and delightsome, that they, might not be inticing unto my people the Lord God cause a skin of.   Saying something is black and white does not refer to literal colors. Instead, it is a metaphor representing two different extremes, or two opposites. Young children will often think in these extreme terms because they have not yet developed the nuanced cognitive skills required to see both sides of an issue.   To put it simply: nearly nothing in this world is truly black and white. Me don't dip on the black man's side, not the white man's side. Me dip on God's side, the one who create me and cause me to . Red-headed Woodpeckers, whether male or female, look alike, wearing tuxedo-like plumage with all-red heads from throat, completely over the head and down the back of the head to the base of the neck. Young Red-headed Woodpeckers molt from gray-black heads to all-red heads. In the course of the molt, their heads look splotchy (see photo at right), and their wing tips are not yet fully white.

Ta-Nehisi Coates is a national correspondent for The Atlantic, where he writes about culture, politics, and social issues. He is the author of The Beautiful Struggle, Between the World and Me, and Author: Ta-Nehisi Coates.   Not only does black and white thinking show little appreciation for the world of gray it has even less for the concept of self-reflection. To self-reflect, especially after a decision has been made, could open one to the possibility of being wrong--which defeats the purpose of black and white thinking.   This is Cipher Brief Level I Member Only content. It means everything is polarized, good/evil, right/wrong, liberal/conservative, healthful/unhealthful, etc. It leaves no room for the infinite shades of me.
